Post subject:  Projecting Project-a-Plans

A reader from a small college town writes:

I need to find a way to get the plans/templates of the outdoor Santa and reigndeer plywood cutouts in the Dec1962 edition of Popular Mechanics. I don’t have a slide projector.......can you help me please. I need to make this set in time for the holidays. I hope you can help me. Thank you in advance. Mark

Thanks for getting in touch.

The truth is when these were published, hardly anyone had slide projectors.

Did you see how they divided the picture into grids? The theory if you didn't have a slide projector was that youd divide your plywood into the same kind of grid, then you would freehand what ever was in each box as well as you could.

That's really how 90% of the people who made these did it.

Alternatively would you feel nervous contacting the art department at [a nearby university] and asking for help? Also anyone who designs sets for the local civic theater?

If you were closer to Ohio, I'd be glad to help.

The reader replied:

Paul.... thank you for your response. I'll freehand it. My Dad built his back then... I'm determined to have a set on our house when they arrive this year for Christmas. We've talked about this display in our family many times. Thank you again!.
