Technically this isn't a Christmas movie, but it was more imaginative than most CGI animations to come out. A few bits are derivative. For example, the elves at the North Pole fulfill the same comic relief function as the minions in Despicable Me. A few bits are "stretching it," as far as adding elements that don't really add to the movie except to introduce unnecessary complications. But MUCH of it is imaginative. Reimagining "Santa" as a tatooed Russian giant who loves wonderful toys but can fight like a Cossack warrior when required is not only clever - it's Alec Baldwin's best role in a long time. The Easter Bunny is reimagined as an Australian, boomerang-flinging hare who sounds a lot like Hugh Jackman when he's not trying to sound Amerian or English. Most surprisingly, the show introduces a mythic grandeur to the characters that is -in its own way - more profound than all the silly leaden posturing of "serious" movies like Clash of the Titans. When I saw that this was "loosely" based on a series of books, I thought it might be worth seeing how much of this was derived from the books. Then I saw that the books were fantastically well-drawn children's picture books, but have relatively little of the content of the film. So I give the scriptwriters credit for having the imagination to weave clever, inventive source materials into a child-oriented epic that is greater than the sum of its parts. Some of the scenes with the boogeyman "Pitch" would probably be a little scary for small children. But every time someone tells me they didn't like some kids' movie beause it was "too scary for children" I found out later that they're in the habit of watching Alien marathons or the like with the kids in the room, so your mileage on that point will vary. |
