Nicholas Vachel Lindsay (1879-1931) wrote poetry that was meant to be read aloud. He often traveled the American countryside on foot, making his living by reciting his poems, some of which were written with stage directions. As you read this poem, notice how some lines are crowded with heavy syllables that make you slow down and others let speed gleefully through - both effects actually reinforce the meaning of each line and the poem as a whole.
