The First Noel, from Family Christmas OnlineTMSeveral hundred years ago, the English had a word for Christmas: "Nowell." Of course that word is related to the French word for Christmas "Noel." It's possible that the lyrics we now know as "The First Noel" date back four to six hundred years, but they are English, not French, though we now use the French spelling almost universally. The lyrics were first published in conjunction with the tune we all know in 1833, by William B. Sandys in a collection called "Christmas Carols, Ancient and Modern."
